Top Time Travel Movies

"If we could travel into the past, it's mind-boggling what would be possible." -- Carl Sagan

With the new movie Terminator Salvation opening this weekend, I was going to write about my top ten favorite films dealing with time travel. As I was doing some research, however, I came across a great list on TopTenz.net which pretty much summed up the time-hopping flicks I was thinking about.

Check out the site for the full list, with great video clips and commentary, but here's a summary of the top ten:

1. Back to the Future

2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day

3. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

4. 12 Monkeys

5. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

6. Star Trek: First Contact

7. Returner

8. Time Bandits

9. The Time Machine

10. Butterfly Effect

To that list, I'd also add the Planet of the Apes movies and even Jean Claude Van Damme's Time Cop. Time traveling can be a tricky plot device that opens up a mess of continuity holes. When done right, it can lead to the very best of speculative storytelling.

Nice list, Nick. Should include The Final countdown (1980's US aricraft carrier goes back in time to Pearl Harbor to Kick some serious A$$), way superior to that Butterfly Effect turd.

Also you might get a kick out of this: it's a really nerdy list of problems with the plot of BTTF.

My main problem that I share with this guys is, if Biff totally tried to rape McFly's mom, why do they hire him to wax their monster truck in the future? They couldn't find someone a little less "rape-y" to detail their cars? Just sayin is all. . .

Thanks, Rustin. I never thought of that about Biff in Back to the Future, but you're absolutely right! LOL
