"We know a little about a lot of things; just enough to make us dangerous." -- Dean Winchester
Since it debuted in 2005, the year we got married, my wife and I have been huge fans of the television show Supernatural. Brothers Dean and Sam Winchester, played by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, continue their dad's legacy of hunting down all the spooky things that go bump in the night. What started out as a simple but fun "monster-of-the-week" show has grown into a complex, character-driven saga with a mythology about a war between angels and demons that's still loads of fun.
Supernatural is visually enticing and the monsters are excellent -- ghosts, werewolves, Albanian witches, and legions of demons. But it's the development of the characters of Sam and Dean that raises this show a notch above many other similar horror wannabes in the vein of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They've grown and changed throughout the series, evolving emotionally with each new plot development, episode to episode, season to season.
Beneath the action, adventure, humor, and eye-candy (Lilith, Ruby, Bela), there is a full range of stories dealing with redemption, family bonds, temptation, free will, faith, and of course the obligatory "good versus evil."
This year's cliffhanger raised the stakes again. We're looking forward to what the new season will bring.
