Ten Years and Counting

Quote of the Day: "Expect (and respect) different opinions." -- From the introduction to the City of Kik entertainment newsgroup.

On August 16, 1999, exactly ten years ago today, I started a little newsgroup called the City of Kik. I intended it to be a forum for my friends and me to share news and opinions about the world of media, entertainment, speculative fiction, and pop culture. I used to have a small Web site called Kik's Picks and Pans, a precursor to the blogs of today, in which I'd post weekly essays and other things that struck my fancy. There was a Feedback section where I'd post comments from readers that I received via email. My Web site was short-lived, but I liked the conversations that my writing sparked, so that was the inspiration for the City of Kik newsgroup.

It branched out into other newsgroups with separate themes: the popular City of Utopia for political discussions, the City of Paradise for topics about religion, and the City of Sports.
Special thanks to my good friend Vincent Forgione who designed the original logo and with whom I've tried off and on for the past ten years to launch a full-fledged Web site. A lot has changed since 1999 -- we're both married now, we're both proud fathers. But we're still pursuing the dream: the brand name of my planned company for content development is City of Kik Entertainment.

Now, a decade later, I've come full circle, posting daily essays on my City of Kik blog. I've enjoyed all the debates we've had and all the ideas we've shared on the newsgroups. I hope it's been as fun for those of you who've participated as it has been for me. Can't wait to see what the next ten years bring!

Wow, a decade since you've started COK. I bet you're feeling like your "baby" has grown. Keep up the postings! They're awesome!
