New York is a Baseball Town

Tonight, the New York Yankees face the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series in what will hopefully live up to the term "Fall Classic."  For all the scoop, check out the official site of Major League Baseball

I think this is going to be a great battle as the Bronx Bombers go up against the defending champions.  The Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins made a bold prediction that his team would win in five games in the best four out of seven competition, but the Yankees have proven this year to be a force to be reckoned with.  Not only do they have an incredible team with good pitching and hitting, not only have they won over 100 games in the regular season (with many dramatic come from behind victories), but they also have home fireld advantage, playing four of the seven games at the new Yankee Stadium.

Although there are undoubtedly some frontrunners among the legions of Yankees fans, most true fantatics are diehard loyalists who bleed pinstripes.  I personally have stuck by them since the "Bronx is burning" days and have endured the postseason drought of the 1980s and first half of the 1990s.  I am not spoiled by the dynasty of four World Series wins from 1996 through 2000 or the legacy of 40 Pennants and 26 Championionships over the years; I savor and appreciate each chance we get, and I know that money doesn't guarantee anything in this sport.

New Yorkers live and breathe baseball.  Today, there is a pep rally scheduled at noon in Times Square, and I know for sure Yankee fans will be out there in the pouring rain to show their support for their team.

Yes, Philadelphia has its fans too, some crazier than others.  Both cities have their bad seeds, but the majority are great people who value the joy of baseball, which in my opinion is the greatest team sport ever invented.

Go Yankees!
