Back in May, I wrote about one of my favorite childhood memories, the cartoon series Star Blazers. Now, great news, fellow fans of the trendsetting anime cult favorite -- Japan is giving us a live action movie, Space Battleship Yamato. And it looks pretty good. Here's the YouTube link to the trailer.
It's the story of a legendary Japanese warship modified into a space-faring battleship on a mission to save the planet. Thinking that U.S. audiences would not fully appreciate the iconic reference to the Yamato, the Americanized version inserted a name change to the plot, calling the ship the Argo, based on the mythology of Jason and the Argonauts. (Hey, at least they were aiming for the mythic. It could have been worse.)
It was a great series and I'm looking forward to seeing the live-action Japanese adaptation. I also look forward to the inevitable American remake. It's about time Hollywood remade something from the East besides horror movies.
Maybe then we'll eventually see some other live-action films based on science fiction anime, like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, and the long-rumored Akira. Hopefully they will all do justice to the excellent original animated versions.
