The Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx

I am surprised more people haven't made a bigger deal about the connection between U.S. Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn's recent shin injury and her magazine cover shoot for Sports Illustrated the same week.  I know, I know, none of you are superstitious, but alleged curses are always interesting stories.  The Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx is certainly intriguing.

Click here to read about it on Wikipedia.  Even Sports Illustrated itself acknowledged the Jinx and featured a cover story about it in 2002

All of the examples of bad luck that happen to athletes right after they are featured on the magazine's cover are just morbid coincidences.  As a weekly publication, the law of averages dictates that some of them will face defeat, injury, or other misfortune.  But the juxtaposition between the bad luck and the timing of the covers is still chilling, and that's what sparks speculation about a "curse."

But if the Red Sox could finally overcome the Curse of the Bambino and win not one but two recent World Series, then athletes should have hope that the Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx can also be circumvented.  Also, many sports celebrities have appeared numerous times on the cover of the magazine without any negative impact to their careers.

In the meantime, I wish Lindsey Vonn a speedy recovery.  I hope the Sports Illustrated team sent her some flowers!
