Center Stage Playhouse presents The Red Monkey Theater Group’s production of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Thursday, May 13 through Sunday, May16, at historic Foster Hall, 2474 Westchester Avenue, Bronx, NY. Performances are Thursday-Saturday at 8pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. Call (914) 693-1646 or visit www.redmonkeytheater.org for tickets.

RMTG is thrilled to present Shakespeare’s tale of love and death, set in the wild territory of South Dakota in 1877. Shakespeare’s classic crisis of passion and violence is a collision of grace and loss, family loyalty and unstoppable rebellion. Romeo and Juliet is the story of a young woman and a young man who struggle to introduce love into the world of violence they have inherited from their parents.

“The play is set in the fictional town of Verona,” says RMTG Artistic Director Tal Aviezer. “In many ways, it’s a setting modeled after the historically notable (and infamous) town of Deadwood in the Black Hills of South Dakota. For the purposes of our production, the Capulets represent a clan of transplanted Southerners of Irish descent. The Montagues are a family from the industrial North. The ‘ancient grudge’ between the two groups should be self-evident, as civil blood had been making civil hands unclean very recently and very frequently during that period of US history. This state of affairs also provides the context for the unthinkable relationship between the star-crossed lovers.”
