The Giant Pumpkins and Me

Like Vladimir and Estragon in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, Linus waits and waits in the classic Halloween special It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown for the mighty pumpkin to rise from the pumpkin patch, but he never arrives.  Unlike Linus, I had the pleasure this week of seeing three great pumpkins firsthand.

The Giant Pumpkins have arrived at The New York Botanical Garden!  The display of the largest pumpkins in the world is quite a sight to see.  All three pumpkins weigh over 1,600 pounds each, and the largest has been certified by Guinness World Records as the heaviest in the world, weighing an astounding 1,810.5 pounds!  Folks watching ABC's Live with Regis and Kelly had the chance to catch a televised glimpse of that mammoth squash on Thursday morning, but now people have the opportunity to come up close and see the monster pumpkins in person at the Garden through October 31, 2010.

During Halloween weekend, sculptor Scott Cully will try to break his own world record by carving the big pumpkin and creating the world's largest jack-o-lantern.
