MTV Brings Back Beavis and Butthead

MTV announced that Beavis and Butthead would return to the network with all new episodes starting this summer.  The original series was a big hit in the 1990s after it originally debuted as part of Liquid Television, MTV's series of animated shorts.  As a full series of its own, Beavis and Butthead aired over 200 episodes and led to a successful motion picture, Beavis and Butthead Do America

Created by Mike Judge, the show featured two crude, nerdy, dimwitted friends causing mischief and watching music videos, while offering up silly, juvenile, but often funny commentary (a la Mystery Science Theater 3000). The new show will apparently be the same premise and animation style, just with more contemporary videos and references.

The original series also spawned a successful cartoon spin-off, Daria, about a smart teenage girl with a dry humor, constantly criticizing pop culture and the world around her.  Maybe the new Beavis and Butthead will generate something equally intelligent.  From simple low-brow entertainment, sometimes even higher levels of satire and insight can emerge.
