Greatest TV Theme Songs

Last night I heard the song "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" on some commercial, but it instantly made me think of the classic sitcom Cheers where it served perfectly as the theme song during its 11 season run.  It started me thinking about other great theme songs, a dying art in television.  Here are some of the greatest.

The Addams Family - "They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky. They're all together ooky, the Addams Family. Their house is a museum, when people come to see-em. They really are a screa-um the Addams Family. (Neat, sweet, petite!) So get a witch's shawl on, a broomstick you can crawl on. We're going to make a call on the Addams Family."

All in the Family - "Boy, the way Glenn Miller played!  Songs that made The Hit Parade.  Guys like us, we had it made.  Those were the days.  And you knew where you were then.  Girls were girls and men were men.  Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.  Didn't need no welfare state.  Everybody pulled his weight.  Gee, our old LaSalle ran great!  Those were the days!"

The Brady Bunch - "Here's the story of a lovely lady who was bringing up three very lovely girls.  All of them had hair of gold like their mother, the youngest one in curls.  Here's the story of a man named Brady who was busy with three boys of his own.  They were four men living all together, yet they were all alone, 'til the one day when the lady met this fellow and they knew it was much more than a hunch that this group would somehow form a family.  That's the way we all became the Brady Bunch!  The Brady Bunch, the Brady Bunch!  That's the way we became the Brady Bunch!"

Cheers - "Making your way in the owrld today takes everything you've got.  Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot.  Wouldn't you like to get away?  Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came.  You want to be where you can see our troubles are all the same.  You want to be where everybody knows your name."

Diff'rent Strokes - "Now, the world don't move to the beat of just one drum. What might be right for you may not be right for some.  A man is born, he's a man of means, then along come two, they got nothing but their jeans.  But they got, different strokes.  It takes different strokes, it takes different strokes to move the world.  Everybody's got a special kind of story.  Everybody finds a way to shine.  It don't matter that you got not a lot.  So what?  They'll have theirs and you'll have oyurs and I'll mine, and together we'll be fine, 'cause it takes different strokes to move the world.  Yes, it does.  It takes different strokes to move the world."

The Dukes of Hazzard - "Just'a good ol' boys, never meanin' no harm, beats all you never saw, been in trouble with the law since the day they was born. Staightenin' the curves, flattenin' the hills, someday the mountain might get 'em, but the law never will. Makin' their way the only way they know how. That's just a little bit more than the law will allow."

The Electric Company - "(Hey, you guys!) Moving out in a new way, moving out in a new way,we're gonna turn it on (turn it on).  We're gonna bring you the power (you can do it). We're gonna light the dark of night like the brightest day in a whole new way.  We're gonna turn it on (do do do). We're gonna bring you the power (do do do do). We're gonna tell you the truest words that you ever heard anybody say. Moving out in a new way, moving out in a new way. We're gonna turn it on, we're gonna bring you the power.  It's coming down the lines, strong as they can be through the courtesy of the Electric Company!"

The Facts of Life - "You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have the facts of life, the facts of life. There's a time you got to go and show you're growin' now you know about the facts of life, the facts of life. When the world never seems to be livin' up to your dreams, and suddenly you're finding out the facts of life are all about you, you. It takes a lot to get 'em right when you're learning the facts of life (learning the facts of life), learning the facts of life (learning the facts of life), learning the facts of life!"

Fresh Prince of Bel Aire - "Now, this is the story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down, and I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Aire. In West Philadelphia I was born and raised. On the playground is where I spent most of my days, chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool, and all shootin' some b-ball outside of the school, when a couple of guys who were up to no good started makin' trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one little fight and my mom got scared, and said, 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Aire.' I whistled for a cab, and when it came near, the license plate said 'fresh' and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cat was rare, but I thought 'Nah, forget it. Yo, Homes, to Bel Air.' I pulled up to the house about seven or eight, and I yelled to the cabby 'Yo, Homes, smell ya later.' Looked at my kingdom, I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Aire."

Gilligan's Island - "Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip, that started from this tropic port aboard this tiny ship. The mate was a mighty sailing man, the skipper brave and sure. Five passengers set sail that day for a three hour tour, a three hour tour. The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed, if not for the courage of the fearless crew The Minnow would be lost, The Minnow would be lost. The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle with Gilligan, the Skipper too, the millionaire and his wife, the movie star, the Professor and Mary Ann, here on Gilligan's Isle."

Golden Girls - "Thank you for being a friend, traveled down the road and back again. Your heart is true.  You're a pal and a confidant, and if you threw a party, invited everyone you knew, you would see the biggest gift would be from me, and the card attached would say 'Thank you for being a friend.'"

The Greatest American Hero - "Look at what's happened to me, I can't believe it myself.  Suddenly I'm up on top of the world, it should've been somebody else. Believe it or not, I'm walking on air. I never thought I could feel so free. Flying away on a wing and a prayer, who could it be? Believe it or not, it's just me. It's like a light of a new day, it hit me from out of the blue, breaking me out of the spell I was in, making all of my wishes come true. Believe it or not, I'm walking on air. I never thought I could feel so free. Flying away on a wing and a prayer, who could it be? Believe it or not it's just me."

Happy Days - "Sunday, Monday, happy days, Tuesday, Wednesday, happy days, Thursday, Friday, happy days, Saturday, what a day, rockin' all week with you. This day is ours, won't you be mine. (Oh, happy days) This day is ours (Oh, happy days), Oh please be mine. Hello, sunshine, goodbye, rain, she's wearing my high school ring on her chain. She's my steady, I'm her man, I'm gonna love her all I can. Gonna cruise her round the town, show everybody what I've found, rock'n'roll with all my friends, hopin' the music never ends. These happy days are yours and mine (oh happy days), these happy days are yours and mine (oh happy days), these happy days are yours and mine, happy days!"

The Jeffersons - "Well, we're movin' on up to the East Side to a deluxe apartment in the sky, movin' on up to the East Side. We finally got a piece of the pie. Fish don't fry in the kitchen; beans don't burn on the grill. Took a whole lotta tryin' just to get up that hill. Now we're up in the big leagues, gettin' our turn at bat. As long as we live, it's you and me baby. There ain't nothin' wrong with that. Well, we're movin' on up to the East Side to a deluxe apartment in the sky, movin' on up to the east side. We finally got a piece of the pie!"

Laverne and Shirley - "(One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Schlemeel, Schlemazel, Hasenfeffer Incorporated.) We're gonna do it! Give us any chance, we'll take it. Give us any rule, we'll break it. We're gonna make our dreams come true, doin' it our way. Nothin's gonna turn us back now, straight ahead and on the track now. We're gonna make our dreams come true, doin' it our way. There is nothing we won't try, never heard the word 'impossible.' This time there's no stopping us. We're gonna do it. On your mark, get set, and go now, got a dream and we just know now, we're gonna make our dream come true and we'll do it our way, yes, our way, make all our dreams come true, and do it our way, yes, our way, make all our dreams come true for me and you."

The Love Boat - "Love, exciting and new.  Come aboard. We're expecting you. Love, life's sweetest reward. Let it flow, it floats back to you. The Love Boat soon will be making another run. The Love Boat promises something for everyone. Set a course for adventure, your mind on a new romance, and love won't hurt anymore. It's an open smile on a friendly shore. Yes, love, it's love, welcome aboard, it's love!"

Malcolm in the Middle - "Yes, no, maybe, I don't know.  Can you repeat the question? You're not the boss of me now, you're not the boss of me now, you're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big.  You're not the boss of me now, you're not the boss of me now, you're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big. Life is unfair..."

The Muppet Show - "It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights, it's time to meet the Muppets on the Muppet Show tonight. It's time to put on makeup, it's time to dress up right, it's time to raise the curtain on the Muppet Show tonight. Why do we always come here? I guess we'll never know. It's like a kind of torture to have to watch the show.  And now let's get things started, why don't you get things started, it's time to get things started on the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational, this is what we call the Muppet Show!"

Sesame Street - "Sunny day, sweepin' the clouds away, on my way to where the air is sweet. Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street? Come and play. Everything's A-OK. Friendly neighbors there that's where we meet. Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?"

Welcome Back Kotter - "Welcome back, your dreams were your ticket out. Welcome back to that same old place that you laughed about. Well, the names have all changed since you hung around, but those dreams have remained and they're turned around. Who'd have thought they'd lead ya (Who'd have thought they'd lead ya) back here where we need ya (back here where we need ya). Yeah, we tease him a lot cause we've got him on the spot, welcome back.  Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back."

WKRP in Cincinnati - "Baby, if you've ever wondered, wondered whatever became of me, I'm living on the air in Cincinnati, Cincinnati, WKRP. Got kind of tired packing and unpacking, town to town and up and down the dial. Maybe you and me were never meant to be, but, baby, think of me once in awhile. I'm at WKRP in Cincinnati."

Wonder Woman - "Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman, all the world's waiting for you, and the power you possess. In your satin tights, fighting for our rights and the old Red, White and Blue. Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman, now the world is ready for you, and the wonders you can do. Make a hawk a dove, stop a war with love, make a liar tell the truth. Wonder Woman, get us out from under, Wonder Woman. All our hopes are pinned upon you and the magic that you do. Stop a bullet cold, make the Axis fold, change their minds and change the world. Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman, you're a wonder, Wonder Woman."

As you can see, I didn't include shows whose theme music was just intrumental (like Dallas or Sanford and Son or The X-Files or The A-Team or Bonanza or Mission: Impossible or Hawaii Five-O, etc. etc. etc.) or only had a few repetitive words (like Batman or The Simpsons) -- I think lyrics are part of the charm.  Any others that you think I should have mentioned?  Let me know and I'll include them in a second part to this post soon along with some others that are in my head.
