Rooting for the NASL

The Cosmos are back with a professional team set to play in 2013! The North American Soccer League (NASL), sanctioned as a Division II League by the United States Soccer Federation, is expanding to New York. I previously wrote about how happy I was to see the Cosmos return as a club, with Pele as their Honorary President. Although they still aren't at the level of the pro Major League Soccer (MLS), it's a step in the right direction for the renaissance of the legendary Cosmos.

While the MLS's Red Bulls (formerly the MetroStars) are New York's marquee soccer team, it will be great to see the Cosmos take the field again for games that matter. They will join the Atlanta Silverbacks, the Carolina RailHawks, FC Edmonton, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, the Minnesota Stars FC, the Tampa Bay Roadies, the Puerto Rico Islanders, the San Antonio Scorpions, and Ottawa in their quest for victory.

Will the Cosmos draw fans beyond the nostalgia lovers who remember the glory days of the original team back when the old NASL flirted for a brief moment in history as a viable rival to other pro sports? We shall see.
