Dwayne Johnson Will Star in Hercules Movie

Actor Dwayne Johnson, formerly known as "The Rock" during his days as a professional wrestler, has been cast in the title role of Hercules in a new movie about the son of Jupiter (or Zeus, depending on if you're sticking with Roman or Greek mythology). The film will be directed by Brett Ratner and is based on a series of comic books about the character, The Thracian Wars and The Knives of Kush

Johnson has had an interesting cinematic career so far -- The Mummy Returns, The Scorpion Returns, Walking Tall, Doom, Southland Tales, Get Smart, Race to Witch Mountain, Tooth Fairy, Fast Five, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, and the upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

Director Ratner has previously helmed Rush Hour, The Family Man, Red Dragon, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Tower Heist.

Hercules is one of those iconic characters that has been featured in Marvel comics and Disney cartoons as well as a bunch of live action adventures. Actors who have portrayed him include Steve Reeves and Lou Ferrigno.

Will Dwayne Johnson give us a memorable portrayal of the demigod or will it be a forgettable footnote in the chronicles of classical hero?

Kevin Sorbo did a great job with the TV series. Miss it. The Rock has some big shoes to fill. But a great franchise to re boot.
