Beyond Fairy Tales

ABC's hit show Once Upon a Time, in which fairytale characters are brought into the "real world," has been one of my family's favorites. It has been great to see all the twists and turns with familiar characters, such as the Evil Queen, Rumpelstiltskin, Pinocchio, Snow White, Prince Charming, Red Riding Hood, and all the rest. Since Disney owns the network, the show has been able to tap into some of the "Disney-versions" of the characters, such as Belle from Beauty and the Beast. The writers have even introduced some storylines beyond the limitations of the traditional Grimm fairy tales -- for example Mulan from the Chinese legend, Captain Hook from Peter Pan, and the Mad Hatter from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.  I suppose any story to which Disney owns the rights or which exists in the public domain is fair game for Once Upon a Time.  Might we see a story arc in the magical realm of Oz for example, or as one of my friend's suggested, set in the Star Wars galaxy?

This Sunday night's episode brings back Dr. Victor Frankenstein, who was introduced in a previous episode.  While definitely not a fairy tale, it raises the question of "magic vs. science," which can be a lot of fun when done right.  After all, advanced technology can appear to be the stuff of fantasy to those who don't know how it works.

Where will they go with the Frankenstein plot?  What other characters, from fairy tales and beyond, will the series introduce?  Tune in and find out.
