Upcoming Stageplay About the Yankees

As I was skimming through the audition notices in the latest issue of Backstage, I came across news for what could be a great new play -- Bronx Bombers, written by Eric Simonson, who wrote the interesting Magic/Bird, which I reviewed last year. This new theater production, which will be produced by the non-profit Primary Stages, tells the story of the legends who played professional baseball for the esteemed New York Yankees!

The character breakdown in the casting call lists some of the headline names throughout the glorious history of the winningest franchise in sports history -- Babe Ruth, Joe Di Maggio, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig, Elston Howard, Derek Jeter, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson, and Thurman Munson.  (What?  No Don Mattingly or Phil Rizzuto???) Other roles include Yogi's wife Carmen, and two characters through whose eyes the story will likely unfold (although I'm only speculating) -- Bobby Sturges, "a room service employee at the Boston Sheraton...trying to find his calling" and Sheldon Birkett, a sports writer "fearlessly uncovering the truths behind pro sports lies."

Auditions take place June 4 and 6 in New York, and the show will run September 17 through October 19. Click here for the full casting call.
