James Gandolfini's Other Acting Roles

It's a testament to James Gandolfini as an actor that when news broke out that he had passed away from a massive heart attack while vacationing in Italy so many people who never met him in person felt as if they had lost a neighbor or a friend. He will forever be known as the gangster Tony in The Sopranos, a series that revolutionized television -- again his talent was paramount as he made viewers sympathize with a monster. There were many more great roles in his repertoire, however, besides just Tony Soprano.

He starred on Broadway in a theater production of On the Waterfront and then earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance in the original stage version of God of Carnage.

While his TV roles may have been overshadowed by his landmark work on The Sopranos (which earned him multiple awards), he also played Walter Difideli in Gun, Bobby Eggs in Nicky Deuce, and most memorably Juror #6 in a remake of 12 Angry Men and Craig Gilbert in Cinema Verite. He also appears in the first episode of the upcoming Criminal Justice.

It was on film that he had a nice string of characters. His first appearance was as an orderly in the no-budget Shock! Shock! Shock! He then had an uncredited role as a henchman in The Last Boy Scout. (Another uncredited role, this time later in his career, was as Diner Cook #2 in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.)

From big roles to tiny roles, he always gave it his all and was a compelling, larger-than-life figure on the screen.  Here's a list of his many portrayals.
