My Contenders for the Song of the Summer 2013

Summer officially begins this Friday, but prognisticators are already trying to predict which song will be the so-called tune of the season. It's an arbitrary distinction -- do we base it on the highest record sales, on the most radio plays, on how many times we hear it played at parties and weddings, or just on which tune is stuck in our heads the most during the months to come?

The "song of summer" is not necessarily a song about summer, which is a sub-genre in itself (such as "The Boys of Summer" by Don Henley, and later Codeseven and then the Ataris,  or "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama), it's a song that for years to come might remind us of June, July, and August of that particular year.

The hits are easy to quantify -- "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor in 1982, "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" by Bryan Adams in 1991, "Waterfalls" by TLC in 1995, "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy in 1997, "Umbrella" by Rihanna in 2007, and "I Kissed a Girl" by Katy Perry in 2008.

Some songs are just catchy, guilty pleasures, such as Los Rio's "Macarena," Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca," and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe."

There are others that are personal choices that bring back waves of nostalgia for me whenever I hear them, because I recall listening to them on the beach when I was a kid ("Don't You Love Me Baby" by Human League, "Forever Young" by Alphaville, or "Girls Girls Girls" by Motley Crue.)

Here are the three songs that I think are the biggest contenders to be the song of summer for 2013.

Number one is Fall Out Boy's excellent "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light 'Em Up)." It's a great, fun song with a nostaglic rock vibe that ties in perfectly with the lyrics.

Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" is also a keeper, with its contagious dance beat. Even disco-haters will probably enjoy it.

Finally, I'm a sucker for Icona Pop's "I Love It." My wife hates it, but I can't get it out of my head.
