Addams Family Cartoon Movie Coming Soon

Variety's Dave McNary reports that MGM is developing an animated feature film reboot of The Addams Family. While many people remember the franchise based on the 1960s black-and-white television series starring John Astin, Carolyn Jones, Jackie Coogan, Ted Cassidy, and the rest, or the two motion pictures starring Raul Julia, Angelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci (let's forget the third direct-to-video film starring Tim Curry and Darryl Hannah), the concept is perfectly suited for cartoon form.

Originally created as a series of panel illustrations by Charles Addams, many of which were published in the magazine The New Yorker, I have high hopes for the new animated film. The script is being written by Pamela Pettler who wrote Corpse Bride, Monster House, and 9.

Fans of the hilarious and macabre characters Gomez, Morticia, Pugsley, Wednesday, Uncle Fester, Grandmama, Lurch, Cousin Itt, and Thing will surely delight in seeing a big screen cartoon version after seeing the live action adaptations on TV and the silver screen (not to mention on Broadway in a musical version starring Bebe Neuwirth and Nathan Lane -- and later Brooke Shields).  I didn't even bother to see the Canadian-filmed series The New Addams Family.

A few years ago, Tim Burton tried to mount a stop-motion film version, but that fell apart.  There were some nice cartoon versions in the 1970s and then an animated series in the early 1990s. Hopefully, this new big screen effort will be a triumph.

Happy Halloween, everyone!
