Another Marvel Movie Hit

The golden age of superhero movies continues with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is breaking April box-office records and garnering good reviews. Marvel Entertainment, via its parent company Disney, continues its string of crowd-pleasing, money-making blockbusters, sparking the other Hollywood studios to try to mimic its success.

The Captain America sequel succeeds because it has a talented cast, a decent story, a good mix of action and humor, terrific production values, and the kind of shared-universe plots and character development that fans have long loved from the original comic book sources.  Buzzfeed and others have been analyzing the Marvel model that has worked so well.  Can DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. launch similar interconnected hits?  Sony is trying with Spider-man and 20th Century Fox has come closest with its X-Men franchise.  Still, imagine what Disney might do if they had all the Marvel characters back under its cinematic control and could add Wolverine, Spidey, and the Fantastic Four in the next Avengers movie?

Winter Soldier works as a stand-alone film, even as it builds upon the motion pictures that came before and strongly hints at more movies on the horizon. Enjoy this streak while it lasts, just in case there's an end in sight. For fans of these characters, it's great to see them come to life so well on the silver screen. Hopefully, they'll be able to keep the hits coming.
