David Letterman Announces Retirement

It truly is the end of an era as David Letterman announced that he will be retiring sometime in 2015.  As a new generation of late night talk show hosts emerges, the old guard is fading into the sunset, and Letterman marks the last connection between the glory days of Johnny Carson and today's crop of Jimmies.

I remember watching Letterman when he was on NBC, enjoying his Top Ten Countdown and Stupid Pet Tricks, watching him throw watermelons from the roof and seeing him do crazy stunts like jump into a vat of water while wearing an Alka-Seltzer suit.  Like many, I just assumed that he would be the heir-apparent to Carson's throne at a time when there was no real threat to The Tonight Show's ratings dominance. Read The Late Shift for an amazing chronicle of what transpired as Letterman was shunned for Jay Leno and landed on CBS, turning the late night television landscape into a truly competitive battlefield.

Letterman will be missed.  I hope he enjoys his retirement. Thanks for all the laughs and all the great moments that will go down in TV history.
