TV Musicals

The new show Galavant is a fun musical romp, reminding me of The Princess Bride with its tongue-in-cheek irreverence and Spamalot with its song-and-dance routines set in an anachronistic Middle Ages.  It's not the first television show that's been conceived as a musical, with songs an integral part of the plot.  We've also had:

Cop Rock

Some of these, obviously, have been more successful than others.  Maybe it's a wise choice that Galavant will be a limited series with only 8 episodes during its first season.  Other TV shows have used musical numbers, especially children's programming (The Fresh Beat Band, The Magic Garden, Sesame Street, The Backyardigans, Lazy Town, etc.), and cartoons for all ages such as The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, and so on.  Some shows incorporate music, like American Horror Story: Freak Show, but you can't accurately label them musicals.  Then of course there have been musical specials, like The Sound of Music and Peter Pan, adapted from the stage, or original ones like Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

The most fascinating examples of the genre are when non-musical television series suddenly offer an episode that's presented as a musical.  You'd be surprised how many there have been.
