MTV Moonman Redesigned for 2015 Video Music Awards

You can add this to the top of the coolest looking award trophies.  World-renowned fashion designer Jeremy Scott is redesigning the MTV Moonman for the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards and it looks dazzling. Winners will receive a special edition version of the iconic man on the moon holding an MTV flag, which became the symbol of the popular network for generations (yes, MTV which launched in 1981 can now boast that it has spawned generations of fans!)

The new design replaces the silvery original with a rainbow sheen. The MTV flag now appears as a television color bar (which younger viewers might not recognize, having likely never seen it before in this streaming video age). The Moonman himself (or could it be herself, tough to tell under that bulky astronaut suit, maybe the Moonman name is deceiving) is now wearing a big-bling peace sign and Jeremy Scott's signature Adidas sneakers.

Maybe the other awards shows should take note.  Giving Oscar a makeover, even a temporary one, might be one way for the Academy Awards to attract a younger audience.  Despite its critics, MTV has always known how to connect with its core viewers.  The host for this year's show will be Miley Cyrus, who made headlines a few short years ago with her glorious twerking performance. Her green-screen promos for the show have been fun and outrageous, hinting at the no-holds-barred entertainment to come during this year's live show. Those MTV folks know what they're doing. Heck, no matter how often I rant about wanting them to air more music videos, I still watch their non-music programming (such as Scream, an excellent series, catch it if you haven't already).

The 2015 MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. It's the one night of the year when the network embraces its music video roots, so tune in and celebrate with them, and dream with me of having your own technicolor Moonman on your mantlepiece!
